Tips for Safely Applying to *ANY *external Non SSU-Affiliated Scholarships

• Never pay to apply. Legitimate scholarships do not require application fees, “processing fees,” or purchases.
• Review the organization’s website. Look for clear contact information, a professional web presence, and transparent eligibility guidelines.
• Protect your personal data. Avoid sharing sensitive information such as your Social Security number, banking details, or personal identification numbers unless you are certain the organization is legitimate and requires it for disbursement—not for initial application.
• Be cautious of unrealistic promises. Claims of “guaranteed awards,” “exclusive offers,” or unusually high funding amounts may be red flags.
• Use your judgment. If something feels off or too good to be true, it most likely is.
