Harold T and Alice M McCarthy Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to new incoming first year students only
Established in memory of Salem natives Harold T. McCarthy and Alice M. McCarthy, this scholarship supports talented students pursuing studies in Art + Design at Salem State University.
Mr. Harold McCarthy dedicated over 30 years to teaching English at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He was passionate about travel and deeply committed to personal growth, inspiring his students to pursue the same.
Ms. Alice McCarthy devoted more than 50 years to a career in nursing, working in both hospital and academic settings. She had a profound love of the arts and, in her later years, explored and developed her talents across various artistic mediums.
The scholarship provides an annual full award—covering tuition, fees, and room and board (less other aid) to an entering freshman who demonstrates financial need and is enrolled as an Art major. The award is renewable for up to four years.
