Charlotte Forten Scholarship
Charlotte Forten (Salem Normal School 1856) was an abolitionist, writer, poet, educator, translator, and women’s rights advocate. Born in 1837 to a prominent Philadelphia African American abolitionist family, Charlotte Forten was a tireless advocate for the end of slavery, equality for women and people of color, and education for all. Her life embodied activism and advocacy for social justice. The student recipient of this scholarship will exemplify the qualities of Charlotte Forten in their academic, professional and social life.

Preferred for individuals with lived experiences reflecting the needs of populations historically underrepresented in higher education, and/or from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and/or have experienced educational disadvantages so long as these considerations are in keeping with the goal of obtaining the educational benefits of equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice.
